Next Unit Event : August 15-17, 2008
Battle of Hanover Reenactment
(North Forney Ave @ Good Field) Hanover, PA 17331
The 1st Maryland that you see here today was formed in 1997, as 1st Maryland Cav. Company B, a dismounted cavalry unit. In April 2005 we incorporated as the unit seen above.
We are a family friendly non-political group of American Civil War re-enactors, who portray the Confederate Cavalry of North Virginia and the civilians who supported them. The unit continued to attract new members including Artillery, Dismounted and Mounted Cavalry members. In April 2005 we incorporated as the 1st Maryland Cavalry Battalion Battery B Companies A E H CSA Inc.
We currently have over 50 members in the unit , 5 horses, 2 Mountain Howitzers, and an Original Field Battery gun.
The 1st Maryland Cavalry Battalion, CSA is a combined unit that strives to reenact the citizen soldier from Maryland. It was formed to provide enjoyable opportunities for individuals and families to experience, learn, and in return, teach others about all aspects of life in the mid-19th century. Everything from the military conflicts and tactics to civilian life with its social expectations and implications, are experiences that Living Historians in the 1st Maryland Cavalry attempt to re-create.
We attempt to authentically portray and represent the camp life of the soldier during the War Between the States. This organization also attempts to demonstrate to the public the many day-to-day duties and responsibilities of the common soldier in the 1st Maryland Cavalry (i.e. Picket Duty, Officer's Call, drill). The troopers in the 1st Maryland Cavalry work to become proficient in the drill manual, Patten’s Cavalry Drill and Saber Exercise for both mounted and dismounted, and Patten’s Cavalry Drill, Supplement for the manual of arms. Every attempt will be made by all military personnel to try and recreate the military atmosphere in camp, with an emphasis on 1860's military customs, traditions, and protocol. Members are also highly encouraged to do first person impressions at events, whenever possible.
The 1st Maryland seeks to
emulate the social customs of the 19th
Century in camp and in the field. Men are expected to be gentlemen; women
are expected to be ladies; children are to be obedient and to respect their
elders and shall be protected by adult members of the unit.
Prejudice has no place in the 1st Maryland,
neither that of race, sex, creed, or heritage. Equal respect is to be
extended to persons from all parts of the United States and to re-enactors
regardless of the color of their uniform.
